Armenian National Currency

The Dram

The dram is a republican monetary unit of Armenia and  Republic of Artsakh which was introduced on 22 November 1993. 1 dram is subdivided into 100 luma, which, however, is not circulating because of its meagre purchasing power. At a rate of about 500 drams for 1 US dollar, louma is equivalent to 0.002 US cents. In circulation there are the coins of 10, 20, 50,  100, 200, 500 drams  and banknotes with denominations of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 drams. A hard currency can be exchanged at currency exchange offices throughout the city. In large banks or in many hotels you can exchange Eurocheques. To avoid additional exchange, it is better to take tourist checks in US dollars. Credit cards (American Express, Visa, Euro / Master Card) are acceptable in all international hotels, in many shops and restaurants - often with charging commissions for a banking transaction. Bank working hours are  9.00-16.30 from Monday to Friday. Currency exchange offices are open until midnight and also work on weekends and holidays.
